Breaking the Cycle of Generational Trauma

The same way in which our families pass on their culture and traditions, they can also pass down generational trauma. Everything that has affected the generations before us, psychologically, behaviorally, socially, and has never been dealt with is passed on to us. Passed onto us in the way we are raised, the way we are treated, the beliefs that are instilled on us. And it happened to the generation before us and the generation before that and it has never been dealt with and it just becomes “the way it is.”

So how do you break the cycle? How do you not pass on this trauma to the generation after you?

The answer is awareness and healing. It begins with being aware of how the generations before us have passed down trauma, while at the same time seeking an understanding. Understanding that perhaps the generations before us were operating in “survival mode” and did what they could, understanding that perhaps there was a lack of education and resources, and understanding that they themselves never had the opportunity to heal, while simultaneously understanding that it does not have to continue being that way. Becoming aware of what no longer serves us or the generations after us and realizing that we have the power to break the cycle simply by healing. Healing oneself, is ending centuries of trauma.
